Bak Kut Teh at Sun Fatt Kee, Seapark

It seems like it’s been quite a few weeks since my last post on a bak kut teh place, this cannot be be happening!

So today, let me introduce this little bak kut teh place at Seapark that I have visited since a few years ago. Tucked within Sun Fatt Kee kopitiam and somehow overshadowed by the busy mamak that is famous for its nasi lemak at night, this bkt stall isn’t flashy nor it is particularly busy.

bak kut teh at seapark
wholesome bak kut teh, and i love their vegetable

Bak kut teh here is served in a clay pot, with teow chew style soup that is pretty flavorful. Ingredients are as per standard bkt places, lean meat, fat laden meat, knuckle, intestine, tripes, ribs, tofu skin, mushroom, and vegetable – if you asks for everything, my default choice usually.

I particularly like the “oily vegetable” they serve here, it is laden with a lot of fried garlic and oyster sauce, which makes it quite flavorful and not merely a dish with its sole purpose of making us feeling less guilty of having only meat.

horng, rachel, dree, suan, having bak kut teh
everyone had bak kut teh except dree, who ordered nasi lemak (halal bah!)

Although this isn’t the best bak kut teh I’ve had (i’d say it is above average though); the very old school ambiance, friendly service, and convenience its location (close to where I stay) more than make up for it. The price is in line with most other bak kut teh places at around RM 10 ish per person.

The bak kut teh stall only opens for dinner, in the afternoon, the same kopitiam has a pretty good teow chew porridge stall.

Weng Heong Bak Kut Teh at Klang

It’s been a while since I wrote a bak kut teh entry, in fact, the last one was more than 3 months ago. For a food important enough that I dedicate an entire category on, this hiatus is far too long.

It was not like I’ve stopped eating BKT. The lack of new entry has to do with the fact that it was getting difficult to convince my regular eating buddies to try out new places when they already have their favorite BKT joints. Meng Kee at PJ Old Town, and Yap Chuan at Puchong are the two places we frequent lately.

restaurant Weng Heong at Klang

After a brief retreat to Awana Genting with colleague and a bunch of friends a couple weeks ago, we decided to get some bak kut teh for lunch at Klang. Naturally we head to the BKT capital that is Taman Intan at Klang.

There’s at least half a dozen BKT specialty restaurants within stone’s throw distance, at one point of I had wanted to try all of them but somehow didn’t get around doing it, maybe I should… emm..

Anyway, instead of the over packed Teluk Pulai BKT, we decided to head right next door at restaurant Weng Heong (永香海参瓦煲肉骨茶).

the glorious pot of goodness – Bak  Kut Teh

For the 8 of us, we ordered two pots of clay pot bak kut teh, some yau char kwai, and a plate of vegetable to go with oily rice. We kept it fairly simple, one pot of lean meat, and the other mixed lean and fatty pork, didn’t order any innards either.

I usually do indulge in all sorts of spare parts and not-exactly-lean meat, but the order was a right one as it turned out that I was the only one not on 100%-lean-meat diet around the table. If we had ordered innards and pork knuckles too, I’d probably be typing this at a hospital recovering from heart attack right now.

Yau Char Kuai, oily rice, and of course, some vitamin C

Like most Klang Bak Kut Teh, this one did not disappoint. The soup was rich and full of aroma, the meat too cooked to perfection, soft and flavorful. Fried shallot is available to add an extra character to the yummy oily rice that goes so well with the soup too, no one was complaining (except for the heat and lack of air conditioning).

As per old school bak kut teh practice, boiling water is available right next to our table for self serving hot tea refills. The staffs were quite speedy in refilling soup too, always a good thing at BKT places.

The bill came to about RM 10 – RM 12 per person, pretty much in lined with most other BKT places just about anywhere in Klang Valley. The lunch was mighty satisfying, but next time I should do it for breakfast instead.

Xhin Fhong Bak Kut Teh at Sungei Way, PJ

The restaurant business is sometimes like real estate, the whole “location, location, location” mantra can be as important as food and services itself.

This couldn’t be more evident when it comes to Xhin Fhong bak kut teh at Sungei Way. Though located just a stone’s throw away from Ah Sang bak kut teh, this home converted BKT restaurant is little known. I didn’t know of its existence till I read it on Sue Lynn’s blog.

Xhin Fhong Bak Kut Teh, Sungei Way
Xhin Fhong bak kut teh at Sungei Way

The restaurant consists of some 10 tables arranged at the drive way of an old house, with the “kitchen” neatly tucked at a corner. While they serve all the typical bak kut teh ingredients, unlike a typical kopitiam, you can’t really expect a full fledge drinks menu.

One thing that I really like about Xhin Fhong is their service. The aunty is ever so friendly, additional soup is served without even asking. Same can’t be said about most other bkt places.

glorious bak kut teh, yau char kuai, and inoki mushroom
Yao Char Kuai, Enoki mushroom, clay pot Bak Kut Teh

We ordered a clay pot bak kut teh with everything in it, a bowl of yau char kuai, and a serving of enoki mushroom as side dish to go with oil rice (white rice available too)

The soup was fragrant and rather “kao”, and the meat and innards cooked to perfection. Our bowl of goodness includes ribs, pork belly, meat, pork tripes, intestine, tofu pok, vegetable, and a little bit of mushroom.

The yao char kuai was crispy and makes a good appetizer while waiting for BKT to be served. Enoki mushroom, well, tasted like enoki mushroom, but the serving size here was really impressive.

We definitely had a good brunch, and the total bill came to around RM 10 per person, which was pretty reasonable considering we also ordered canned drinks (BKT best goes with tea, I know, I know, but the weather was way too hot)

To get to Xhin Fhong, I recommend parking near the Indian Temple, walk up the inner road to the right side and take the first left turn, you should then be able to see Xhin Fhong just a few houses down from the intersection.

Give this place a try especially if you’ve been to Ah Sang, Xhin Fhong is definitely worth a visit.

Friendship Bak Kut Teh at Taman Cheras

Way back in 2005, just a few months after starting this blog, I ran out of things to write. Ideas came in, and the first one that I considered was to actually specialized on all things bak kut teh.

That idea was of course, a little too limiting, but it was the seed that eventually spawn this humble food blog. So there you go, a little bit of background that you most likely don’t care on a Friday. :D

Friendship Bak Kut Teh at Taman Cheras
Friendship Bak Kut Teh, with pork tripe soup, braised pork knuckle

Anyway, bak kut teh remains one of my favorite Malaysian Chinese food. Today, I shall introduce this particular unassuming bak kut teh stall at Cheras that was one of Haze‘s regular dinner spots.

The bak kut teh stall is situated just a stone’s throw away from the biggest intersection in Cheras. Other than bak kut teh, the friendly female owner serves up really pork tripe soup that has a pretty good kick too.

Bak Kut Teh with enoki mushroom
clay pot bak kut teh with enoki mushroom

The bak kut teh comes with all the usual ingredients – pork, fatty pork, liver, intestine, stomach, and like a lot of the more modern outlets – enoki mushroom too. While I can’t say that the soup is the best I’ve had, it quite decent, and I do like the extra spicy chili padi they serve.

If you eat here, make sure you order yau char kwai though. The lady source this from her ex husband and it’s really one of the best yau char kwai I’ve had with bak kut teh. Like a lot of places, you get to choose from oily or normal steamed rice.

KY & Haze
KY and Haze, late night bak kut teh dinner

While strictly speaking, this isn’t the best tasting bak kut teh, I do love going there for it’s ambiance and the warm and fuzzy feeling the owner always exude. The pork tripe soup and of course, the yau char kwai give more than good enough reasons to visit there too. (have yet to try the braised pork knuckle yet).

Friendship bak kut teh is open from evening till about 1am.

Sun Foong Bak Kut Teh at Imbi

One of the benefits working in a 1Malaysia kinda company is that you get the same treatment for everyone, when our Muslim colleagues go for prayers, we too, get 2 hour lunch on Fridays.

Last Friday we took the recommendation from our Bidayuh colleague Angelina and went for Sun Foong Bak Kut Teh at Imbi, just a short drive from our work place in the heart of the city.

Sun Foong Bak Kut Teh, Imbi
Sun Foong Bak Kut Teh

To be honest, my first impression of Sun Foong is that of a TSH (tourist slaughter house). Lots of air conditioned indoor dining and alfresco tables, a little too clean and walls plastered with too many touristy posters.

I usually liked my BKT place to be one of old school settings, like Xhin Fhong of Sungei Way, or Weng Heong at Klang,  but I reserved my judgement till after food tasting.

pork kidney soup
pork kidney in Chinese rice wine soup

The first thing that caught my mind while looking at the menu was the availability of pork kidney, I immediately ordered a small portion of pork kidney in Chinese rice wine soup. If you’re a fan of innards, don’t ever miss pork kidney, it is the reason I go to Kaka BKT in Kepong.

The pork kidney was indeed prepared the way it’s meant to be, sort, tender, and just very lightly cooked. I enjoyed this very much.

Then there was the bak kut teh. For the five of us, we actually only ordered portion for three, which proved to be quite sufficient as the portions were rather big (RM 15 per portion).

While the additional vegetables and mushroom did not make this bowl of BKT shine in a BKT beauty contest, the taste actually exceeded my expectation. Even my colleague Ivan from Klang gave it a thumb up. The soup had a very strong and wholesome herbal taste that we liked, I think we asked for additional soup at least 3 times.

Oily vegetable was just normal, and to be frank, the yao char kuai was a disappointment at Sun Foong, so not everything is a hit there to be honest.

Sun Foong also serves seafood bak kut teh (which I’d probably never bother to try) and some other dishes like pork knuckle with vinegar and salted vegetable dishes, those could be interesting.

Our bill came to be something like RM 18 per pax including drinks, a pretty normal sum for good BKT meal in the city. This is a place worth returning, decent value for money and rather tasty BKT.

Gong Xi Fa Cai and wish you have a happy and prosperous Rabbit year!

It’s been a tradition of sort for my family to come over to KL from Penang every year over CNY since 6-7 years ago. This is partly to avoid the crazy traffic in Penang (and the commute), plus I suspect, maybe giving mom a chance in having real Klang Bak Kut Teh at least once a year. :D

Kedai Makanan Nan Sian, Klang
Kedai Makanan Nan Sian, Klang

So on the third day of Chinese New Year we drove all the way to Klang in search for any bak kut teh restaurant that’s open for business.

After the Klang toll and turning back into Jalan Batu Tiga Lama, there was Kedai Makanan Nan Sian. Incidentally, we also came here some 6-7 years ago at about the same time for BKT, with my late dad then, as my mom recalled. It has been that long.

dry and soup bak kut teh, klang style

While we only had the soup BKT on the first visit, there’s dry bak kut teh to go along with the more traditional soup version this time around. For those who have been sleeping over the last 5 years or so, dry bak kut teh has since taken on major stride and available at many major BKT outlets these days.

The dry version is rumored to have made popular by Lai Choon Klang BKT, not far from Nan Sian.

The dry version over here is as good as any, with plenty of sliced okra, dried chili, and I suspect, a little bit of dried cuttle fish to add to the taste. It was flavorful and intense.

The soup version is proto typical Klang style, very herbal, thick, sticky, and with a big pork bone in the middle of the clay pot too. We had it with pork knuckle, 3-layer meat, pork tripe, intestine, a bit of mushroom, tofu, fu chok, and that slice of lettuce (mostly for decoration). If you like them old school Klang BKT, you can’t go wrong with this one.

The satisfying lunch came to about RM 11 or so per person, and we left happy with full stomach. I should go to more Klang BKT places

A couple days ago I got the attack of the bak kut teh craving, you know that feeling when you just have to have it, so much so that you can almost smell the bkt soup even before even deciding where to eat.

So I decided to head to SS 14, one of the few places with concentrated bak kut teh restaurants at night time. A quick search online and I found that my buddy Galvin gave a good review for Ah Ping bak kut teh, if it’s good enough for the Klang chao ah beng, it is good enough for me.

Ah Ping is easily the busiest bak kut teh restaurant at SS14. This of course, is a good sign. As it was already dinner time, parking was actually a breeze.

We took a seat inside (you can have a table alfresco style to0 when weather permits) and ordered a bowl of bak kut teh with everything in it + enoki mushroom, a plate of vegetable, and a serving of yao char kuai.

Our bowl of “everything in it” came with plenty of pork, intestine, tripes, fuchok, tofu, a couple shiitake mushroom, and a few leaves of lettuce soaked in pretty thick Klang style (as opposed to Teow Chew) bak kut teh soup.

The bak kut teh definitely packs a punch, I like the soup, and you know that they’ve cooked everything right when the meat falls off the bones easily, and intestines didn’t need more than a few seconds to chew through. It was overall a rather satisfying experience.

The yao char kuai too was quite crunchy, unlike some nighttime bkt places where they tend to use yao char kuai prepared in the morning and tends to be a bit soggy.

Together with drinks, total bill came to be RM 32.50, pretty reasonable for two person. If you’re not willing to drive all the way to Kepong for Kaka bak kut teh (cos they serve kidney), Ah Ping at at SS 14 certainly won’t leave you disappointed.

Bak Kut Teh has always been one of my favorite Malaysian food, and hence it has a category all by itself on this blog. After some two dozen different places covered (more if included those not worthy for sharing), I’m still far from tired of bak kut teh, and today I want to tell you about Nan Feng, where you find the best dried bak kut teh anywhere.

Nan Feng bak kut teh at Klang

The restaurant is situated in the heart of Klang and first introduced to us by our Klang ahbeng friend – Zess. The only guy I know who actually eats bak kut teh some half a dozen times a week, if he says the place is worthy, I won’t bet against.

The restaurant has a typical bak kut teh place set up, with the chef and stall right at the entrance and tables placed both indoor and out, with water kettles strategically placed within arm’s reach.

Other than the traditional clay pot “soup version”, this place also serves dry version of bak kut teh. One that is cooked by reducing bak kut teh soup, dark soya sauce, and enhanced with dried chili, okra, and sometimes dried cuttlefish.

If you come to Nan Feng, this is a must order, they serve the best dry bak kut teh I’ve ever tasted.

chicken feet make a surprise appearance, with plenty of pork of course
chicken feet make a surprise appearance, and you never waste bak kut teh soup

We usually order both versions of bak kut teh when we are there.

The soup has a very strong herbal taste and sweetness of pork flavor in it, typical of authentic Klang bak kut teh (as opposed to Teow Chew version which is usually clear and milder). I was informed that the soup first served in the clay pot is the most “kao” version of all, and those “extra” soup that you ask is from a different pot and usually slightly less flavorful, though honestly they were all excellent to me.

fried shallots adds a lot to the oily rice served here

While at Klang, you should also consume bak kut teh rice like how they do it here – with fried shallots. This isn’t something familiar to me either, I usually only have fried shallots with prawn mee, but I’m liking it. The shallots really added an extra dimension and gives the mixture of meat and rice some crunchiness.

I’ve also been told that the pork intestine soup (peppery type) is awesome here. The only problem is that they usually run out by maybe 10 am, so we’ve yet to try that.

OK guys, it’s time to talk about bak kut teh again, one of my favorite Malaysian food of all time. Today’s bak kut teh is Mo Sang Kor at Taman Berkeley (the branch that is closer for us PJ folks).

bak kut teh naturally goes with a pot of good tea
bak kut teh naturally goes with a pot of good tea

Mo Sang Kor is one of the older bak kut teh establishments, and instead of the usual clay pot with everything in it serving, they do things slightly different here. You order the type of cut you want, and each type is served in a single serving bowl, usually with the meat/innards, a mushroom, a bulb of garlic, and of course, bak kut teh soup.

Most uniquely, you aren’t allowed to ask for additional soup here. What you are served is what you get. This is because the bak kut teh soup here boiled together with the meat and herbs over long hours and is super concentrated.

we had six types of bak kut teh meat/innards
we had six types of bak kut teh meat/innards

Small price to pay for that really aromatic and thickest bak kut teh soup I’ve ever tasted. You will learn to appreciate the broth in smaller doses here, they are fantastic.

As there were six of us, we ordered 6 portions of different items that day. There were big bone (“tai kuat”), 3-layer pork belly, pork knuckle, spare ribs, ribs, and intestines. The meat were properly cooked and so tender they fall off from the bones easily, you could almost chew them down without dentures.

If you plan a visit to Mo Sang Kor, make sure you get there early so that you get to choose from different cuts of meat. By brunch time, all that’s left might be only lean meat.

Price wise, they are competitive to Klang’s standard. Everything comes out to around RM 12 per person including rice and tea.

If you are a bak kut teh soup lover who places emphasis on quantity, don’t go there, but if you love quality and could live with rather low volume of fantastic bak kut teh soup, this is a place you should check out.

Ahhh, bak kut teh, one of my favorite Malaysian foods, so much so that there’s a category on this blog for it. Last weekends I had the privilege of having two bak kut teh brunch in a row, and the second one was this place that I haven’t been before, an old school establishment by the name of Restoran Chow Kiat, at Klang of course.

Chow Kiat bak kut teh at Klang, can't get any more old school than this
Chow Kiat bak kut teh at Klang, can’t get any more old school than this

We met at Ken Rimba (more on that in upcoming post) on Sunday morning and Sam Tan, the executive director of KEN Holding Bhd brought us here to share one of his favorite bak kut teh outlets.

It was only 9:30 am and the place was packed. According to Sam, by 10:30 am or so, some of the better cuts would be unavailable already. While the premise sells bak kut teh in the morning as well as at night, they are run by different operators. The morning session that we tried is said to be the more superior.

The bak kut teh here is as old school as they come.

There’s no clay pot, no vegetable, no pepper soup, extra mushroom, or any of those other options that purists tend to label as “gimmicks”. Just pure unadulterated bowls of pork (or chicken legs, the little known ingredients in Klang bak kut teh) with just enough of those thick herbal soup.

The only non meat dish you can order is yao char kuay, and to be honest it is pretty average here.

The meat and soup tho, was excellent!

Pork cooked to perfection and so soft you can pry it off the bones just by using your spoon, and the fats? Oh my, they are so flavorful it’s a sin not to have. The soup is thick, packed with herbal goodness, and unlike the similarly styled (and equally delicious) Mo Sang Kor bak kut teh, you can ask for extra soup.

Choices of meat includes ribs, big bone, small bones, “kawan” (this with plenty of fats, super delicious), stomach, intestine, lean meat, and more. If you love bak kut teh, this is definitely one place to check out. Prices are similar to other establishments around the area.

While most bak kut teh connoisseurs will tell you that the best bak kut teh dishes are from Klang, I believe that there exists many good quality stalls and restaurants offering the same dish outside of its place of origin. Not too long ago, we went to Kg. Chempaka in PJ to try out one of the newer places in town by the name of Hou Siang.

There is Klang and Teochew style bak kut teh, the former being stronger tasting, and the latter slightly sweeter and less herbal. Hou Siang bak kut teh advertised to be of 100% Klang.

The bak kut teh stall is located within the kopitiam that shares the same name. There’s no air conditioning or table cloth, and thankfully, the food was as unpretentious as the restaurant.

A big clay pot of bak kut teh here is good enough to share among 5-6 people. There’s the signature “big bone” with plenty of collagen & tendon, fatty meat, intestine, ribs, and pork knuckle too. It is really a no nonsense serving of bak kut teh,  other than pork, bone, and soup (essentially the definition of bak kut teh,) there’s no other ingredients.

While the soup isn’t the most fragrant of strongest I’ve tasted, it is actually still very good, probably one of the better versions outside Klang.

Tofu, yau char kuai, extra innards, and other ingredients can be ordered as sides, and I really like the way they serve extra soup on separate bowls for everyone and refills them constantly. I hate it when bak kut teh places are stingy with their soup, this place definitely do it right.

I love a good bowl of bak kut teh, and while it is generally true that you often get the best bak kut teh at Klang, going all the way to the “ah beng country” isn’t always practical.

For those who aren’t familiar with bak kut teh, there are actually two versions. There’s the thicker broth infused with pork bones typical of Klang’s style, and then there’s the Teow Chew version that is lighter but more herbal.

Heong Kee at Seapark is a bak kut the stall that offers one of the better Teow Chew style bak kut teh.

The unassuming stall is situated just a stone’s throw away from the KFC at Seapark (which is also the first KFC I visited in Klang Valley more than 20 years ago, but that’s not the topic for today.) There are about half a dozen foldable tables by the stall, with a canopy just in case the weather turns back.

I like the fact that the meat here is always very well cooked, and while the soup is not the most intense, my taste buds are happy with them. You can also add enoki mushroom, yau char kuai, and innards.

A meal here will cost about RM 10-12 per person, they also serve pork tripe soup, vegetable and a few other dishes here.

The golden standard of bak kut teh is the soup, that strong herbal taste with a thick porky flavour that we all love, and almost without fail, we would ask for refill… or so I thought.

A couple weekends ago we were introduced to Ah Her bak kut teh by a local Klang girl and her family. According to her, this is a place where you get perhaps 1/3 bowl of soup, and there’s no refill, but it would be one of the best bak kut teh you’d ever had.

I must say that I had my doubts.

Ah Her bak kut teh at Pandamaran, Klang

Her in Ah Her means fire in local Hokkien dialect, and I suppose that’s just the boss’ name.

Located between Jalan Polis and Jalan Chianniah deep within Klang town, Ah Her bak kut teh’s set up was not unlike many food courts, semi alfresco with a zinc roof on top, plenty of electric fans, and no walls. On the Sunday that we were there, the place was packed. Business starts at about 5-6 pm and the last bowl of bak kut teh goes out before 8:30 pm.

Bak kut teh here is served in their individual bowl (RM 9 per bowl) and you get to choose the cut that you like, there’s intestine, big bone, small bone, 3 layer pork, stomach, ribs, and more.

The locals usually order their favorite and basically eat their from their own bowl, but it’s not uncommon to share. Another place with similar style would be Mo Sang Kor at Taman Berkeley, also at Klang.

Like what the photo shows, you don’t get a lot of soup.

The real deal here, to me, is the meat. It was by far the tastiest pork I’ve had, full of intense herbal flavor that is somehow not overpowering, and all cooked till it’s so tender you could cut them using the spoon.

The soup too was very thick and strong, almost consistency of stew. I really love it, even though there’s no extra serving. You truly learn to appreciate and treasure them.

If you’re a bak kut teh lover, you owe it to yourself to make a drive to this place. I went to another bak kut teh a couple weeks later and find myself not being able to finish, gahh.

Now I really want to try all the other bak kut teh in Klang.

KY eats – Gerai 78 Bak Kut Teh at Pandamaran, Klang

Since we just gotten keys to our new place in Shah Alam, we’ve been making numerous trips to sort out the usual stuff associated with purchasing a new home. Not coincidentally, the place we bought is also just a stone’s throw away from Klang, which is quite convenient for a bak kut teh fan like me.

So we drove to Pandamaran, which is located closer to Port Klang and parked the car near Ah Her bak kut teh, a place we’ve been a few times prior. But instead of going to Ah Her again, we decided to check out one of the few other BKT stalls located along the hawker strip at the area.

This particular place is only known by the stall number – “Gerai 78”

Gerai 78 offers both wet and dry versions of bak kut teh, so for the two of us, we ordered a single portion of each, and both laden with “non lean meat”. We had initially asked for innards, but those good stuff already ran out even though it wasn’t even 7:30 pm yet.

The bkt comes in a clay pot with plenty of fuchok, a healthy dosage of well cooked pork, some vegetable, and mushroom. The soup is thick though not as “herbal” as I prefer. It’ll be top notch in PJ and KL but I guess rather average as far as Klang goes.

as you can see, we don't like lean meat so much

The dry version is pretty basic and unpretentious, there’s no okra nor any part of the pork charred. I thought overall it was more than decent but perhaps not one of my favorite interpretation of dried bak kut teh.

If I want more soup, I may still come here, otherwise I’m hoping over to Ah Her. But either way, you can’t go wrong.

It’s Klang yo!

KY eats – Original Mo Sang Kor Bak Kut Teh, Pandamaran, Klang

My first experience having non-claypot bak kut teh was actually at the Mo Sang Kor branch at Taman Berkeley almost 3 years ago. It was quite an experience.

Fast forward to June 2015, just a few weeks before we move to Shah Alam and in the midst of house renovation, I thought I should try the original Mo Sang Kor bak kut teh shop, as part of my aim to try as many different bak kut teh restaurants in Klang as I possibly can.

Located at Jalan Chan Ah Choo, Pandamaran. The restaurant is no different from many other bak kut teh shops littered along the same road – semi open concept with basic plastic tables & chairs as well as kettle with boiling hot water for your tea.

As usual, you can bring your own tea leaves (like all proper Klang people), or asks for house supplied tea that usually comes in a few varieties.

"kah wan" and "tua kut" bak kut teh
“kah wan” and “tua kut” bak kut teh

For the two of us, we ordered a portion of “tua kut” (big bone), “kah wan” (fatty meat near leg), and a bowl of pork intestine.

The taste was pretty much spot on and actually identical to the version at Taman Berkeley. It had a strong herbal taste with a very slight bitter after taste which I like. Like most Klang bkt, the pork was boiled to perfection and so soft you can peel them off the bone with a spoon.

Most importantly, don’t let the garlic goes to waste either, they are absolutely beautiful.

Compared to Ah Her bak kut teh (one of our favorites), the soup is slightly less thick but has a stronger herbal taste. I like them both.

I did say I’m going to try many bak kut teh places in Klang, right? Well, here’s another one that we went to one fine afternoon after another round of painting work at the new house.

Lao Heong Bak Kut Teh, at the heart of Klang
Lao Heong Bak Kut Teh, at the heart of Klang

Lao Heong Bak Kut Teh is located at the heart of Klang town by one of the busiest roads on Jalan Gelugor. If you’re turning from Federal Highway to Jalan Meru, you’ll pass by the area. The restaurant itself is converted from a residential unit with a large “garden area”, like many restaurants in this part of the country, with the typical BKT set up of boiling water on top of LPG tanks for tea making purposes.

fatty meat is my favorite when it comes to bak kut teh (especially kah wan)

Lao Heong servers clay pot style bak kut teh, and as with many places, you can specify the choice of meat (lean, trotter, big bone, small bone, kahwan, etc). The pot also comes with fuchuk (tofu skin), tofu pok, a bit of mushroom, and some lettuce.

As with most Klang bak kut teh, the pork was pretty tender and the soup packs quite a heavy dose of herbal taste, I can sense a strong hint of “tong guai” which I find quite enjoyable. Adding soup is a reasonable request here as well.

A pretty decent BKT and I would not hesitate to revisit, especially at after lunch hours whereby most other places are closed.

Let’s continue with the slow but steady coverage of Klang bak kut teh on this site.

Today, we are going to look at one of the more popular bak kut teh restarants in the center of Klang town – Sei Ngan Chai bak kut teh by Jalan Gelegor, located just a few steps away from Lao Heong BKT, which I wrote about just a couple or so weeks ago.

Like many other old school Klang bak kut teh restaurants, this place too is converted from a corner unit of a residential house. There isn’t any proper parking lots nearby, but anyone who’s been to this part of town before won’t have too much of a problem finding a semi-legal slot for your vehicle.

While most BKT places opens either at in the morning through lunch time or only for dinner, Sei Ngan Chai operates from 8 in the morning till about 9pm. You still can’t have bkt here for supper, but it covers pretty much all other meals.

We ordered portion for two that comes in a clay pot, as for the choice of meat, it was kahwan (fatty leg part with tendon) with some innards (tripe & intestine). I like the fact that they serve innards, as this is not always available at Klang bak kut teh.

The meat was as tender as other Klang offerings, and the intestine was superb. The soup isn’t thick as Ah Her or Mo Sang Kor’s style, but has a strong herbal taste and was served in pretty good portion.

strangely, there's fishball in this bak kut teh
strangely, there’s fishball in this bak kut teh

Interestingly, there’s also a few fish balls embedded in the BKT soup. They were decent tasting fish ball, and perhaps it is something that the owner tries to set this place apart from hundreds of other Klang BKT outlets, but I think it doesn’t really have any business being in there, not that I really mind.

Anyway, I think Sei Ngan Chai is a worth a visiting again if I need some BKT loving.

Let’s continue with our Klang bak kut teh related reviews, shall we? Today’s we’re looking at something just a tiny bit different from the usual bowl or clay pot type bak kut teh, we’re talking about – Hong Ba (封肉).

I first read about 158 Hong Ba on Jodie’s blog, and since it looked absolutely stunning, we went ahead and gave it a try.

158 Hong Ba at Pandamaran, Klang
158 Hong Ba at Pandamaran, Klang

158 Hong Ba is located at Pandamaran’s Jalan Chan Ah Choo, a street that has quite a few restaurants, at least half of which serves bak kut teh. Yes, Klang people absolutely love their pork.

The restaurant is set up just like a bak kut teh place, with kettle on gas stove for tea making purposes, and semi-alfresco dining area. They serve breakfast/brunch as well as dinner, and purportedly operated by different siblings on those service windows.

you can cut the meat by just using a blunt spoon

Unlike normal bak kut teh, hong ba is more like braised pork with thick herbal gravy. The pork is absolutely tender and super savory, braised eggs and tofu is served together with the fatty pork that melts in your mouth. While they give you quite a generous portion of gravy, it is not “soup” sort of portion, and not meant to be.

It turned out to be pretty awesome, but standard portion for two is actually a bit smallish. Next time I’ll need to order their innards and pork tendons, they looked absolutely stunning!

So if you’re a fan of melt in your mouth porky goodness, this is one of the places you should check out.

KY eats – Klang Coast Seafood Bak Kut Teh, Bukit Tinggi

A couple weeks ago we were at Klang meeting up with Zess, and since it was dinner time, we naturally asked him to bring us to yet another bak kut teh restaurants. This Klang native bak kut teh connoisseur thought, why not something slightly different – so we took a bit of a drive and ended up at Klang Coast Seafood Bak Kut Teh (滨海肉骨茶).

Klang Coast Seafood bak kut teh, Bukit Tinggi Klang

Klang Coast bak kut teh is located at Bukit Tinggi, just a stone’s throw from the huge AEON Shopping Centre, which is about half an hour’s drive from Petaling Jaya.

Parking isn’t an issue at this part of town, and if you can’t speak in Hokkien, ordering with Mandarin is perfectly acceptable.

how about bak kut teh with lala & crabs?
how about bak kut teh with lala & crabs?

Seafood bak kut teh is a relatively new comer to the bak kut teh scene, after the invention of claypot bkt and dried bak kut teh. According to Zess, the operator here (a friend of his) used to be an apprentice of the original place that came up with Seafood bak kut teh in Teluk Pulai before opening his own shop.

We ordered our BKT with fatty portion of pork (tua kut aka big bone, and pua pui chiak aka 3 layer pork) with addition of clam and flower crab.

The Bak Kut Teh soup with seafood comes with a much stronger peppery taste. It was explained that this is necessary to counter the raw seafood taste that may be overpowering. This strategy was achieved after countless experimentation with pepper, chili padi, and so forth. In all honesty, I like it, I thought the herbal taste and spiciness was well balanced.

The clay pot bak kut teh was RM 12 per portion, clam cost RM 12, and the flower crab RM 14. In all, the bill for three of us was close to RM 25 per pax, a pretty decent value all things considered. Would not hesitate to revisit.

Now I want to try other seafood BKT places.

KY eats – Samy & Ah Her bak kut teh, Taman Berkeley, Klang

I did mention that I am going to review as many Klang bak kut teh as I can just a little while ago, right? So here’s another one.

Ever since I first tried Ah Her bak kut teh at Pandamaran earlier this year, I’ve been a fan. However, it only operates at night, and Pandamaran is actually closer to port Klang than it is to actual civilization… so, I was more than happy to find out about the sister branch – Ah Her & Samy bak kut teh at Taman Berkeley.

Samy & Ah Her BKT at Taman Berkeley

The restaurant is located a couple blocks away from the main stretch of shops at Taman Berkeley and operates for breakfast and lunch. The set up is typical of Klang bak kut teh shops, with plastic tables & chairs under zinc roof equipped with electric fans. There’s also ample kettle filled with hot water to refill your Chinese tea pot.

"tua kut", or big bone, is one of my favorite BKT cuts
“tua kut”, or big bone, is one of my favorite BKT cuts

Ah Her & Samy offers traditional bowl type bak kut teh, so you get your own bowl of preferred cut – be it tua kut (big bone), small bone, kah wan (leg joints), trotter, lean meat, intestine, ribs, or whatever fits your fancy.

For this visit, I went for “tua kut” and was not disappointed at all. Just like its bigger sister branch, the meat was tender, and the limited amount of soup given was positively thick, filled with herbal and a strong sense of peppery taste. It was delightful, and I can see myself coming back again and again.

If you like your bak kut teh meat super tender, this is a place you should not miss. A bowl of BKT is priced at RM 10, with rice at RM 1 (regardless of size).
