As we’ve now officially moved to Shah Alam but yet to manage to subscribe to fiber internet line, updates will be still a bit on the slow side, but fear not, here’s another Klang bak kut teh place for you to contemplate – the 155 Bak Kut Teh restaurant at Pandamaran.

Some of you may have come across the 158 Hong Ba post on this site a few months ago, and yes, this house-turned-restaurant bak kut teh place resides along the same road just a stone’s throw away, apparently owned by owners with similar creativity level when it comes to naming their business.

claypot bak kut teh & pork trotter with vinegar

155 Bak Kut Teh actually serves more than just bak kut teh. In addition to the usual soupy version of my favorite pork dish of all time, there’s also the dry version, pork trotter vinegar, and “oily” vegetable. The bak kut teh comes in either clay pot or the traditional China bowl.

Since there was just two of us, we opted for a claypot BKT with soup, and a portion of pork trotter vinegar (RM 11 each). We also tried their yau char kuai as starter.

I always love it when there's unlimited fried shallots|

We chose “kah wan” (fatty meat near pork legs) and was more than satisfied with the quality of the BKT soup with is quite plentiful and still rather flavorful. The meat is tender as any, and for those who favor balanced diet, there’s a few pieces of greens in it.

The pork trotter vinegar though, was superb. It was soft, tender, and absolutely “kao”. The viscosity of the vinegar is quite high with the aroma that’s equally as imposing. I love it.

If you want some balanced BKT with some good pork trotter vinegar, this is a place to check out. Spare the yau char kuai though.

KY eats –大肥婆肉骨茶 (bak kut teh LYL food corner) at Taman Berkeley

Well, I did mention that I am going to try as many bak kut teh places in Klang as possible, right? So here’s another “less famous” places I had the chance to visit several weeks ago – 大肥婆肉骨茶, or LYL FOOD CORNER, which is completely not what 大肥婆肉骨茶 translate to at all.

大肥婆肉骨茶, Taman Berkeley

The bak kut teh restaurant is located somewhere in between the two branches of the more known establishments – Samy & Ah Her, and Mo Sang Kor. It is a single shop lot basic set up, which is similar to probably 90% of the Klang BKT restaurants.

I happened to be the last customer of the day, but lucky me, they happened to still have my favorite cut of the meat available – kahwan.

kahwan, my favorite bkt cut
I was the last customer of the day

The single serving came in claypot with actually rather generous amount of soup, it carries a pretty strong herbal taste with a hint of “tong gwai” taste which I enjoyed. As with most Klang bkt, the meat was tender, and fatty part of pork soft enough to to be cut by the spoon.

大肥婆 did not disappoint actually, it wasn’t as strong tasting as the other two, but the extra amount of soup should cater for those who enjoys slurping down BKT soup. Oh, there’s also fried shallots, which is always good to go with BKT.

When it comes to bak kut teh, the best recommendation usually comes from those who stay or work very close to Klang, so when Yuki mentioned that we should try out Swee Xiang bak kut teh at Klang Utama, I knew that it was not going to be something special, and indeed it was.

Swee Xiang BKT at Klang Utama

Swee Xiang is located at the less glamorous part of Klang, quite a fair bit away from most residential areas. It is about a 10 minutes drive from Klang town itself, in the light industry area opposite the huge 99 Speedmart warehouse along Jalan Kapar.

It is a typical “kopitiam” type of set up, and being located within an industrial area, parking is plentiful, so that’s definitely a plus.

Unlike typical bak kut teh place, Swee Xiang actually offers quite a few differnet dishes. The hong bak here is definitely something that you shouldn’t miss, the soft pork tendon, tofu, and fatty pork knuckle were prepared perfectly with super thick sauce that left me yearn for more.

The bak kut teh is decent but not overly impressive, I’d recommend ordering minimal portion just for completeness and hydration sake.

Interestingly, curry chicken is also one of the more popular dishes here (sort of like Peng Heong paikut offering mutton curry). The version here comes with thick curry broth, soft potato, and juicy chunks of chicken that goes well with steamed rice.

In the interest of taking full advantage of a “cheat day”, we also ordered some intestine & chicken feet to complete the meal. It was quite glorious.

Unfortunately, our session was not 100% complete as the highly recommended pork stomach soup had ran out that day, so it looks like we’ll have to go back there again.

P/S: another good Hong Bak place to check out would be 158 Hong Ba at Pandamaran.

KY eats – Late Night Bak Kut Teh at Kin Kong, Taman Eng Ann, Klang

Klang is of course, the Holy grail of Bak Kut Teh, it is the place that invented the dish, and also the place that has the most concentration of restaurants offering this wonderful marriage of meat and herbs with a serving of rice.

To demonstrate that you can get bkt basically at all times in this town, let’s look at Kin Kong at Taman Eng Ann today.

Restoran Kin Kong at Taman Eng Ann, Klang
Restoran Kin Kong at Taman Eng Ann, Klang

Kin Kong goes against the Klang tradition of having bak kut teh as breakfast, instead, their operating hours are from 9pm to 5am, far removed from ordinary dining hours, which is convenient for those who works at odd hours, or those who just had to have bkt fix after a good clubbing session.

Claypot version is the popular choice here, and like most places, you get to pick the choice or meat – lean, pork belly, big bone, small bone, ribs etc..

The pork is usually soft and juicy, while the soup packs a decent herbal note, though not being the strongest I’ve tasted, they are not stingy with it and you can always ask for refills.

While the bak kut teh mah not be my favorite in Klang, the yau char kuai here was a welcoming surprise. They’re crispy, crunchy, and goes really well with the abundance of soup. If you’re here, ask for a serving.

If you’re looking for a late night fix, Kin Kong won’t be a bad choice to go for.

Let’s get the “trying to try all the bak kut teh in Klang” project going again, this time, we look at Eng Chun bak kut teh at Taman Berkeley, which is located right across the road from the more famous Samy & Ah Her bak kut teh.

Eng Chun Bak Kut Teh, located at Taman Berkeley

The restaurant set up is like most of the traditional old school Klang bkt – single bowl with the choice of cut you want, to go with rice and maybe some chili padi. Of course, Chinese tea is just about the only option for drinks, choose from the type of tea leaves they provide, order a glass, or if you’re a proper Klang resident – bring your own tea leaves.

a single portion of "big bone" cut, rice, and chili padi
a single portion of “big bone” cut, rice, and chili padi

For lunch, I chose one of my usual cuts – big bone, and was greeted with a chunky piece of meat that isn’t the most representative of what big bone should look like, but it is a correct cut nonetheless. The meat turned out to be quite soft, with the fatty part plenty delicious enough for me.

Eng Chun is one of those places that doesn’t serve a lot of food, but they are thick and very herbal, not very different from Samy & Ah Her across the road, but perhaps less peppery. A worthy competitor to be honest, despite getting maybe only half the amount of customers compared to the the more glamourous shop.

If you’re already a fan of the type of bak kut teh serves by the likes of Ah Her or Mo Sang Kor, you will enjoy Eng Chun’s interpretation of this Klang’s famous dish. A single portion of meat is RM 10, and additional RM 1 for rice, so a meal can be had for slightly lower than RM 12 here.

I’ve been reviewing quite a few Klang bak kut teh since we moved to Ken Rimba at Padang Jawa, which is just a couple kilometers away from Klang, but today, let’s look at Teck Kee bak kut teh at Subang Permai, a location that is closer to those of you who stay at the likes of Bukit Jelutong or Subang Airport.

To be honest, I’ve heard about this place for quite a while but the location has always been a bit of a mystery, until we ventured into the area for something completely unrelated did I realized this was the “famous bak kut teh” in Kampung Subang area.

The set up is typical of most bak kut teh shop, basic plastic tables & chair with hot water (this one electrical) supply for those who likes to have bak kut teh with tea. So far, so good.

big bone - single serving clay pot bak kut teh

For just myself, I ordered “tua kut”, or big bone in a clay pot to go with rice, they also serve ginger wine chicken, and dry version of bak kut teh, but I guess I’ll have to try those some other time. Minced garlic and chopped chili padi is available as condiments, which is always good.

I didn't leave anything behind, was a happy diner

While the soup isn’t as thick as some of the Klang’s versions, the pork at Teck Kee is stewed to perfection, not overly soft yet soaked up with plenty of herbal essence as it should. The soup has a good balance to it and I was more than satisfied to finish it all and asked for extras, which they complied without batting an eyelid.

Overall it was more than worthy, if you’re within 5-10 kilometer radius, this is a definitely a good bak kut teh place to check out.

Bak Kut Teh at Klang is not merely a popular dish, it is pretty much a way of life. There are hundreds of bak kut teh sellers in the municipal, each offering their unique interpretation of the Malaysian-invented dish, and best of all, with varying operating hours so you can actually have a good bowl of bak kut teh goodness anytime around the clock.

yeap, bak kut teh from 5pm to 5am
yeap, bak kut teh from 5pm to 5am

After picking up my sister my sister from the airport late at night over CNY holidays, it was just natural that we cross an item off her “back to home” bucket list – good old fashion Klang BKT.

For that, we went to Kedai Kopi Taman Eng Ann for some porky goodness. While the shop offers breakfast and other dishes in the morning/afternoon session, BKT reign supreme from 5 pm to 5 am daily.

The bak kut teh here comes in a clay pot, and in addition to your choice of pork (kah wan, big bone, small bone, 3-layer belly, ribs, etc), there’s also a few leafs of vegetable, tofu pok, and some mushroom.

The pork lives up to the reputation of Klang bkt – soft, tender, and flavorful. The soup is quite strong on herbal taste as well, and they’re not stingy with refills, which is nice.

However, there are no deep fried shallots here, tho generous amount of chopped garlic and chili padi accompany the clay pot dish, which is fine by me.

Surprisingly, the yu tiao (yau char kuai) here is crunchy and quite delicious, a departure from the usual soggy business of other places.

Prices here is fair and on par with other BKT sellers in the area, I think I prefer this over Kin Kong (which is somehow more “famous”) located a stone’s throw away and operate at similar hours.

Let’s continue with another Klang bak kut teh review since I said I was going to make it a bit of a mission to go to as many different bak kut teh in Klang as possible. So here’s BB Bak Kut Teh Garden at Bandar Baru Klang, located close to Bukit Raja Jusco and one of our favorite tai chao places in the area – Da Tuan Yuan.

BB bak kut teh garden, Bandar Baru Klang
BB bak kut teh garden, Bandar Baru Klang

BB bak kut teh garden often have moderate to even rather low review, and personally I think a lot of it has to do with how the place looks like. The setting is almost like a modern food court, with pictures, banners, and a menu that illustrates the price and exactly what you’ll be getting very clearly. This runs in contrast to most old school BKT places that expect you already know what you want.

Additionally, they also serve some non-BKT dishes, such as steamed fish, fried vegetable tofu, sea cucumber, and so forth. All of which gives this place a “less authentic” look.

kahwan, and intestine in claypots, all finished
kahwan, and intestine in claypots, all finished

But to be perfectly honest, I actually found the BKT pretty decent. A bowl (RM 10.50) or clay pot (RM 12.50) is right around the average asking price, though some reviews may suggest that this place is a little more expensive than others.

On our visit I had kahwan (right around the leg joint with plenty of fat & tendon) and intestine. They were properly tender and the soup too had a strong herbal flavor, tho perhaps not as complex tasting as some. I actually enjoyed it.

BKT meal, I'm happy

So don’t let the look of a place fools you. If a BKT place can survive in Klang, they’re usually pretty capable when it comes to taste. If you keep an objective mind, you’ll often not be disappointed.

KY eats – Xin Lai Hing Bak Kut Teh, Near Klang Parade

Let’s get back on the project of trying as many bak kut teh as possible in the birth land of this amazing dish – Klang. Today we take a look at one of the small guys – an unassuming small corner restaurant near Klang Parade by the name of Restoran Xin Lai Hing.

Xin Lai Hing bak kut teh, near Klang Parade

We chanced upon this relative newcomer to the bkt scene in Klang while visiting one of our regular Vietnamese kopitiam at the area and thought to give it a try. Interestingly, in addition to bak kut teh, they actually also serve a small selection of Vietnamese dishes here, though we did not have an opportunity to sample those.

kahwan and intestine for 1.5 portion
kahwan and intestine for 1.5 portion

For the two of us, we ordered a 1.5 portion of clay pot bak kut teh with a mixture of kahwan (around the ankle) and intestine. The dish comes with piping hot soup that is pretty strong in herbal aroma with a slight bitter note which I find quite pleasing. There isn’t much peppery note which may or may not suit individual taste but I do find it pretty good.

The meat is probably softer and more tender than most I had, and you can definitely cut it with a spoon, quite delightful as the fatty bit melts in your mouth. I also like the fact that the small intestine is stuffed with even more intestine, perfect for offal lovers.

There’s some tofu skin and a bit of tofu pok as well as few leaves of fresh vege in the soup, enough to give it a false sense of balanced meal, who cares?

KY eats – Original Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh, Klang

I’ve read somewhere that there are over 400 bak kut teh restaurants just in Klang alone, so looks like there’re more work to be done in sampling as many of these comfort pork dishes as I can, while I can!

Just a week ago, we went over to Jalan Teluk Pulai and ended up at the original Restoran Telok Pulai Bak Kut Teh for a pretty satisfying brunch.

Original Teluk Pulai Bak Kut Teh shop, at Jalan Teluk Pulai of course

For the uninitiated, Teluk Pulai BKT shop at Taman Intan (blog post from 10 years ago), the commercial area right after Federal Highway Sungai Rasau toll with the big Maybank building, is perhaps one of the most famous bak kut teh restaurants in Klang.

For many who aren’t from Klang, my younger self included, the first taste of proper “Klang BKT” often equate to this particular brand, so I thought the original shop is worth a visit.

a bowl of clay pot bak kut teh = comfort
a bowl of clay pot bak kut teh = comfort

Teluk Pulai BKT is located at the middle of the row of shop lots that’s flanked by two other BKT shops at each end. Seating is a combination of indoor & semi-outdoor arrangement, and like most BKT establishments in Klang, there’s plenty of kettles with hot boiling water for tea making purposes stationed within.

For the two of us, we ordered a 1.5 portion (yes you don’t have to go full 2 portion) of clay pot BKT with kahwan (near leg joints), small intestine, and pork stomach. There’s also dry version if you’re into that.

don't waste those BKT soup!
don’t waste those BKT soup!

To be honest, it tastes pretty much exactly like the branch at Taman Intan, the soup base has a pretty decent herbal tone and well balanced, with the meat soft and the fat very tender. I thought the small intestine was very well done as well, stuffed within itself multiple folds. There’s also tofu pok, button mushroom, and a bit of green presence in the clay pot, that’s the beauty of Klang BKT isn’t it? Plenty of different presentations and choice of ingredients.

For condiments, you get garlic, chili padi, and as much fried shallots as you want to pour over the oily rice, which made for a pretty satisfying brunch overall.

They’re also very generous in giving customers more soup to top up the clay pot, so if you’re those who love slurping down that delicious herbal nectar, this would not disappoint.

Of the 400 some bak kut teh places in Klang, one of the most unique offerings of them all has got to be Ah Tao Seafood Bak Kut Teh at Teluk Pulai, for this is the very place that the whole idea of having seafood in bak kut teh came into fruition… I think.

Ah Tao bak kut teh is located at Beng Heong restoran, at the corner

If you’re looking for a sign that says “Ah Tao BKT”, you won’t find it. The stall is located within Restoran Beng Heong, on the same row of shop houses also include the original Teluk Pulai BKT situated in a stone’s throw away. Parking is usually not a very challenging task, but they do sell out by 10am or so on weekends, so getting there early is a must if you want to avoid disappointment.

While they also serve “normal” bak kut teh in clay pots, the unique selling point here is their seafood infused BKT. If you simply go with seafood, they’ll include big prawns, lala, sea cucumber, fish fillet, and perhaps squid together with your choice of pork meat (I usually go for “tua kut” aka big bone, or “kahwan”).

Alternatively, you can also opt for crab, or just lala, just prawn, and so forth. I tend to think anything involving shells work best, such as lala, crab, or prawns.

prawns, fish fillet, and lala are among the extra ingredients

To make the herbal soup “compatible” with seafood and partly to avoid unwanted seafood smell, the soup is made spicy with quite a fair chunk of chili padi, so what you have then is a very unique taste of spicy bak kut teh. I love it, it was like BKT on steroid.

I’ve only been to Ah Tao a couple times since, but I figure there’ll be quite a few more future visits.

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have known about Hon Ki BKT if Ah Tao of the famous Ah Tao Seafood Bak Kut Teh was still alive.

When I was sharing the news of Ah Tao’s demise (RIP) with Zess over Chinese New Year, our Klang ahbeng who’s well versed with everything bak kut teh then mentioned that perhaps I should check out Hon Ki, a bak kut teh outlet that also makes a habit of adding seafood to the old fashion Klang dish, as his sister had good experience with it. So I did.

Hon Ki Seafood Bak Kut Teh, converted from a residential unit

Hon Ki is a second generation bak kut teh eatery that has been in operation for over two decades, according to the proprietor, they have been serving seafood bak kut teh even during his dad’s time, so this is definitely not one of those “me too” sort of place that tries to jump on any bandwagon.

Situated at Persiaran Pulau Pinang (what a coincident for a Penangite) just opposite Klang Parade across Jalan Meru, the restaurant is converted from a corner lot terrace house with zinc roof, a basic set up that is sufficient and rather typical of Klang BKT scene.

The bak kut teh here comes in clay pots, choose the meat of your choice and you can have it dry, with soup, and of course, with a number of different seafood options to add on, such as fish fillets, prawns, abalone slices, or flower crab. Unfortunately, lala or kappa isn’t an option here.

prawn? crab? pork? why not all?
prawn? crab? pork? why not all?

Like other bak kut teh with seafood, the soup at Hon Ki very spicy as well, and this is done with loads of red chili padi, which I found slightly more convenient not accidentally chew one down, it also has a slightly different aroma and hotter compared to the green type. The additional complexity from seafood does give the bak kut teh an extra dimension, I love it.

KY eats – Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh, The Original BKT

Several weeks ago I chanced upon an article on The Star newspaper on Teck Teh and how it is believed that this is where it all started, the origin of bak kut teh in Malaysia. Since I am a self confessed bak kut teh fan, I did myself a favor and promptly went there for a visit.

Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh, the origin
Teck Teh Bak Kut Teh, the origin

Teck Teh is located near the Klang train station, just right across the river in Klang town. The shop has been operating for some 50 years and it sure looked like they haven’t really renovated the place sans some newer kitchen equipment since then.

The old man running the shop is now the 3rd generation chef who still uses the same ingredients & spices as per his grandfather’s recipe. If you want the taste of the origin, this is the place to go.

bak kut teh for one, at Teck Teh, Klang

I ordered a portion of “tua kut”, or big bone, together with a tea which came in the form of loose leaf on a piece of newspaper.

The pork, as with most other Klang version that came after it, was really tender, juicy, and packed with herbal flavor. The soup itself was not the thickest but has a distinct taste of traditional spice which I found rather palatable. It was a more than decent meal of BKT to be honest, except for one little “problem”.

which cut would you choose?
which cut would you choose?

Now, this place is so original they don’t serve garlic, chili padi, or even soya sauce. Yes that’s right, you’re supposed to only taste the sweetness of pork and the aroma of soup without any alteration.

I find myself suffering a little bit since I do really enjoy some chili padi with those fatty pork meat, but I guess it works for many regulars who seemed to keep coming back.

If you’re a fan of BKT though, you should probably give this place a try (maybe bring your own soya sauce)

While you can get bak kut teh all around the clock in Klang, it is still mostly a breakfast option for most natives around here. So prior to work a few weeks ago, I decided to head to one of the more popular old school bkt places to get my morning fix – at Seng Huat bak kut teh.

Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh
Seng Huat Bak Kut Teh

Seng Huat is located just right beside the main Klang bridge and stone’s throw away from the origin of bak kut teh at Teck Teh. The corner shop has plenty of seats right at the side by the river, which makes for quite a comfortable dining area compared to the slightly stuffier interior.

one big bone for me please

This is an old school type of bkt place, so there’s no such thing as claypot, vegetable, enoki mushroom, or any of those distractions. You order your favorite type of meat and you get it served in a bowl and a plate of rice. What they do have though, is chili padi & soya sauce, which Teck Teh doesn’t even serve.

I asked for a tua kut (big bone), one of my favorite parts for breakfast.

What came was quite a huge portion (especially for breakfast) of meat that was appreciatively soft enough to fall off its bone quite easily. The soup was quite thick & flavorful, though to be fair not the thickest I’ve had, Mo Sang Kor or Ah Her would probably satisfy you more if you want it thickest possible.

Over all though, it was a pretty good breakfast, and one that I would not have a problem to revisit. If you want it more “original” though, head to Teck Teh for some surprise.

Bak Kut Teh infused with seafood is not exactly a recent invention in the land where this uniquely Chinese-Malaysian dish originated, and of the various different variants of bak kut teh, it is probably the most rare, hence it is no surprise that many bak kut teh fans does not know about the existence of seafood BKT.

My love for seafood bak kut teh started with Ah Tao at Teluk Pulai, a place where I’ve returned multiple times. Sadly, Ah Tao returned to the maker this past CNY period and the place has been closed down (or on haitus) since.

This prompted me to start looking for another good spot to satisfy that cravings.

After a few attempts with limited success, I think I finally found one that’s worthy to be Ah Tao’s replacement in my book – the unassuming BKT stall at the corner of Restoran Yun Heng at Klang Utama (not far from another one of my go-to Hong Ba + BKT place – Swee Xiang)

We went there last weekend when my brother was in town, and for the three of us, we had 1.5 portion of bak kut teh with lala, and another portion of fish head.

The bak kut teh soup really did hit the spot for all of us, it was a perfect balance of hotness, herbal note, and really strong seafood sweetness from the lala. They may not have the variety of seafood available as with Ah Tao, but lala is all you need, especially if it’s done as well as they did here.

We didn’t plan to order the stewed fish head dish, but since they were a bit low on pork (we got there past 1:30 pm) and the owner suggested it, I thought why not?

The dish turned out to be pretty good in itself, it was another spicy dish but one with much thicker soup and slightly sweeter in taste. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, the chicken feet in the stew was very good too.

Overall damage was just under RM 20 per person, and I’m 100% sure I’ll be heading back there again for some lala BKT goodness.

KY eats – Ah Chee Bak Kut Teh, Bayu Tinggi, Klang

A couple weekends ago while trying to play catch up in tasting as many different bak kut teh restaurants in Klang as humanely responsible, I took up the offer from Zess, our resident Klang bkt expert, and met up for a sumptuous brunch at Ah Chee clay pot bak kut teh.

Ah Chee is of course, another one of Zess’ friends (this guy knows a lot of BKT operators). The restaurant is located at an end lot at the rather busy commercial area at Bayu Tinggi, Klang.

If you’re not familiar with Bayu Tinggi, well, it is basically located in between Bukit Tinggi and Port Klang, a place that’s frequent mostly only by Klang residents.

For the 5 of us on a Sunday morning, we kept it simple and just asked for the softest meat with their signature intestines plus fuchuk (tofu skin).

Like every place that Zess brought us thus far, this one again checked all the boxes. The soup is more than decent, thick, flavorful, and on par with most other Klang BKT I’ve tried.

The meat though (at least the version we had), was really tender with melt in your mouth fats. I really enjoyed that, but that was not the best part.

The star of the meal was their intestine. The stuffed intestine is probably up to 7-8 layers and thus had this really great texture to it. If you consume offal, this is a must-eat.

The meal came up to under RM 20 per person, right about average in terms what you expect to pay for good BKT meal. Will be glad to revisit.

KY eats – Old Style Teck Seong Bak Kut Teh, Klang

A couple weeks ago one of my friends, Michael, a true born & bred Klang guy sent me a picture of a bowl of old school bak kut teh via WhatsApp and claimed that this place is so good they usually sell out by 8:30 in the morning. The name oft the shop – Teck Seong bak kut teh.

Coincidentally, this restaurant also happen to be located just minutes away from where I stay, makes visiting for weekday before-work-breakfast perfect. So I did just that the very next morning.

It is true that bak kut teh is mostly a breakfast dish in Klang, and some of the best outlets only operates in the morning. Like many of these places, Teck Seong starts early in the morning, at 6 am.

"pua pui chiak" cut, or 3 layer pork
“pua pui chiak” cut, or 3 layer pork

The offering here is of the most old school style – one bowl of pork of your choice per person to go with steamed rice. You do get chili padi and soya sauce as condiments.

I’ve tried “pua pui chiak” (半肥瘦) and “tua kut” (big bone) at Teck Seong and the experience has been great. The soup, while a bit more subtle than the likes of Mo Sang Kor, it still holds a strong herbal note. The flavor of meat though, is among the best I’ve had, then there’s the fat, they just melt in you mouth. Excellent.

A single portion with rice is RM 11, so prices are more than reasonable, if not slightly cheaper compared to some at the area. If you’re a fan of old school style BKT, this is surely one to check out.

KY eats – Ah Sou Bak Kut Teh, Jalan Batu Tiga Lama, Klang

Looking to expand my bak kut teh experience just a bit more, I took little Chaly on a bit of an excursion and came upon this familiar little corner extension by the name of Ah Soh Bak Kut Teh by Jalan Batu Tiga Lama the other day.

Then it dawned on me that this was actually one of the first bak kut teh places I had over a decade ago, on one of the last trips my late dad made to Klang Valley. We were wondering around Klang looking for this famed dish during the CNY holiday season and this happened to be one that was in operation. Brought back the memories, sadly there’s no pictures taken that day.

Ah Soh bak kut teh is operated by none other than Ah Soh herself (I assumed), offering clay pot style of this classic dish with a unique offering that’s not common in Klang – yam rice is on the menu if it suits your fancy.

The bak kut teh itself is right about middle of the pack, the meat and fat bits could be a little more tender, soup has a strong herbal note, with their intestine done really well. Additionally, the yau char kuih is one of the better ones around as well.

unfortunately they ran out of yam rice that day
you can have it with white rice too if yam rice isn’t your thing

If you are one of those who loves more soup, Ah Soh is more than happy to comply to those request as well. If you love yam rice, this is one of the few BKT places to visit, even though this option is quite common in Penang if I remember correctly.

KY eats – Teong Bak Kut Teh, Klang

I’m always on the lookout for new bak kut teh places, and since we now stay a stone’s throw away from Klang, this isn’t an issue at all when there are some 400-500 BKT stalls/restaurants in the area.

Teong Bak Kut Teh, Klang

My latest exploit was this old bak kut teh restaurant by the name of Teong Bak Kut Teh situated at Jalan Miri right across the more popular Nan Feng bkt restaurant, which is also one of our regular go-tos.

Teong is one of those restaurants that is so old when the sign board is first hung on top of the shop, internet didn’t exist, and you still have to physically dial the phone instead of  pressing buttons. If a shop is this old, chances are there’re good reasons they’re still around.

After hearing a friend mentioned about his friend who may have said some good things about Teong BKT, I decided to pay a visit. The restaurant is set up like most other BKT places, with plastic chairs & tables, a “kitchen” by the front, and kettles with boiling water for your tea making convenience.

what's a better way to start the day?
what’s a better way to start the day?

I ordered a portion of pua pui chiak (half fat half lean) for brunch. The bak kut teh came in a small china bowl with the meat almost as tender as the version at Teck Seong, and a soup base that’s not overly thick but still carries a good herbal note, with a hint of sweetness in a good way. As for condiments, you have fried shallots, chili padi, and soya sauce – plenty good enough in my book.

Teong BKT is now in my “will return for more” list of BKT places in Klang.

KY eats – Siong Huat Seafood Bak Kut Teh, Klang

Since I am somewhat known for being a bak kut teh lover (which I am), I suppose it is appropriate to not go too long between bak kut teh posts, so today I present you – Siong Huat Bak Kut Teh, at Port Klang.

Siong Huat Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang
Siong Huat Bak Kut Teh, Port Klang

As mentioned, this particular bak kut teh place is located near port Klang, so for those who travels from other parts of Klang Valley, it is indeed quite a distance. However, since the Federal Highway toll is dismantled, the journey cost RM 4.20 less, and so there’s no excuse to not do this.

Furthermore, Siong Huat also has a dedicated parking lot for dine in customers, which makes it that much more convenient.

Unlike many bak kut teh places in Klang that concentrate on either bowl type bkt (one where you specify just 1 particular cut of meat, served in bowl), Siong Huat offers claypot style bak kut teh in soup & dry versions, and also with options for seafood. On top of that, they also offer a variety of “tai chao” dishes.

bak kut teh does go very well with lala
bak kut teh does go very well with lala

For the 8 of us, we ordered a big portion of bak kut teh with lala (spicy version), a regular clay pot bak kut teh, a dry version, a plate of vegetable, and steamed garupa fillet with ginger. All of these to go with steamed rice, like god intended.

The seafood bak kut teh was served with a pretty generous amount of lala and chili padi. The cili padi is necessary in any seafood bak kut teh soup base to balance the seafood taste with herbal aroma. The version here is as good as others I’ve tried in Klang, such as Yun Heng’s lala bkt, or Klang Coast at Bukit Tinggi, but perhaps a notch below Ah Tao’s version (sadly he passed away). Definitely satisfying.

The regular soup based as well as the dry bak kut teh were competent in their own right, with the soup version accompanied by pretty good tofu skin as well.

Additionally, their steamed garupa fish is a must order for those who love fish. The ginger was spicy, and fish tasted superbly fresh and done just right,  goes well with steamed rice.

For those with some sense of adventure, Siong Huat also serves cendol with actual durian (RM 16 per bowl), a dessert fit as a meal on its own, and priced accordingly.

As for our over ordered meal, it came to around RM 40 per pax, including the pricey dessert. Worth it.
