KY eats – Samy and Tien Bak Kut Teh (night), Klang

The birth place of bak kut teh, Klang, has perhaps one of the most competitive bak kut teh scene in the country, with population of some 750,000 (according to wikipedia) and a claimed of some 3-500 bak kut teh restaurants, it also has the highest BKT restaurant per capita.

From these mostly mom & pop restaurants rose a few familiar names of BKT sellers any connoisseurs of this dish would recognize- with one of them of the Ah Her & Samy family.

Well, they now have a new outlet at Taman Intan out to tackle the night market by the name of Samy & Tien Bak Kut Teh, challenging Weng Heong just a few shops down the street in luring those who look for a good BKT dinner.

Much like it’s sister branches of Ah Her at Pandamaran (night), or Samy & Ah Her at Berkeley (morning/lunch), Samy and Tien offers BKT in single serving bowls with a choice of your favorite parts – such as paikut (ribs), tua kut (big bone), seh kut (small bone), nui kut (soft bone), pua pui chiak (3 layer pork), and so forth.

paikut or tuakut? take your pick
paikut or tuakut? take your pick

As for taste, it is almost exactly alike their sister branches. Thick herbal soup with a strong peppery note, and with the meat coming in soft, tender, and flavorful.

Also similar with their sister branches, it is not meant for those who seek lots of soup to go with their BKT. This is not due to them being stingy, but there’s only so much broth you can make to achieve these sort of thick consistency.

So if you’re looking for one of the better bowl type BKT in Klang for dinner, now it’s just some 10 mins drive from Subang, with no more toll to pay as well!

KY eats – Kee Heong Bak Kut Teh, Taman Eng Ann, Klang

I supposed it is about time I post another bak kut teh entry on this blog, after all, of the some 3-500 bak kut teh restaurants in Klang (and more in other parts of the country), this is only entry number 59 of this awesome dish in this blog. My job is far from done!

For this entry, let’s go to Taman Eng Ann’s Kee Heong bak kut teh.

Kee Heong bak kut teh, Taman Eng Ann
Kee Heong bak kut teh, Taman Eng Ann

Kee Heong bak kut teh is one of the older names. Situated at Taman Eng Ann by the morning wet market, it is usually quite packed in the morning, while stream of customers usually tapers down towards brunch/lunch time.

You can order bak kut teh here in old school individual bowl style, or in claypots. The standard choice of cuts are available here  – big bone, small bone, ribs, soft bone, kahwan, etc. They also have yao char kuai (disappointing texture, like all Klang bkt places I’ve tried so far), and more importantly, there’s fried shallots if you ask nicely.

The texture of meat and fat here is as good as any, with soup carrying a decent herbal note, tho not nearly as strong as the likes of Mo Sang Kor or Ah Her, but plenty good enough for claypot type fare.

In terms of tasting note, I find Kee Heong pretty close to Weng Heong for me. It certainly has my endorsement for anyone who wants to have a good soupy BKT breakfast in the morning.

Well, time for another bak kut teh entry, and for this round we’ll look at Restoran Law Tian – one of only 24-hour bak kut teh places you can find in Klang (and perhaps anywhere)

Law Tian Bak Kut Teh, Klang

Law Tian is located just a couple minutes from the end of Federal Highway into Klang, conveniently, there’s a parking lot right next to the restaurant that doubles as alfresco dining area at night.

Law Tian restaurant actually offers quite a number of food stalls, with the bak kut teh being one of them that operates around the clock.

The first time I visited Law Tian BKT was some 8-9 years ago, and somehow it escaped my mind until several weeks ago while thinking of a late night supper.

We ordered “nui kut”, or soft bone (near ribs) in clay pot for two pax (RM 14 per pax without rice, RM 1 for rice). The bak kut teh meat is true to Klang standard, soft, tender, and full of flavor. The soup at Law Tian, while not overly strong, is very competent for clay pot type and carries a good herbal note.

I also thought that the tofu skin served is rather good as well. Overall I found the bak kut teh perhaps a bit better than Kin Kong & Eng Ann’s version if we’re to strictly compare late night versions.

KY eats – Teck Huat Bak Kut Teh, Bandar Baru Klang

Realized it’s been a while since I last posted anything in Klang Valley, I suppose it’s appropriate to get back on talking about my favorite dish – bak kut teh. This is in fact the 60th such post on this blog, yeap, a bit much perhaps, but someone’s gotta do the job.

Teck Huat Bak Kut Teh, Bandar Baru Klang
Teck Huat Bak Kut Teh, Bandar Baru Klang

Teck Huat bak kut teh is located at Bandar Baru Klang, a stone’s throw away from Aeon Bukit Raja, and less than a couple minutes away from NKVE toll.

If the name rings a bell, it is because the restaurant is operated by the same family that brought the country our very first bowl of bak kut teh, the inventor itself – Teck Teh, and if my information is correct, this is in fact the brother of Teck Seong, one of my other go-to BKT restaurant.

"pua pui chiak", or pork belly meat
“pua pui chiak”, or pork belly meat

Teck Huat offers both standard bowl-type bak kut teh as well as in clay pot depending on your preference. I went with the former and yes, it does carry the signature subtle herbal note with some of the most tender pork texture just like the other Teck’s.

If you like one, you’ll like the other two.

Unlike Teck Seong, Teck Huat usually operates till lunch, parking is also a simpler affair at this area, so if you long for some good old fashion bak kut teh, this is certainly a worthy place to visit.

KY eats – Ki Heong Bak Kut Teh, Bukit Tinggi Klang

Several weeks ago when my family was in town, we decided to meet up my cousin & extended family for a bit of a catch up session, and when you stay near Klang, the obvious option is bak kut teh, so that’s how we ended up at Ki Heong bak kut teh.

Ki Heong Bak Kut Teh, Bukit Tinggi Klang
Ki Heong Bak Kut Teh, Bukit Tinggi Klang

Ki Heong (not to be confused by Kee Heong at Taman Eng Ann) is located at Bukit Tinggi, occupying two shop lots with one side fully air conditioned.

This is perhaps one of the best things anyone’s done to bak kut the – having it served in climate controlled environment! I mean, hot soup and hot weather doesn’t work so well together otherwise, right? Perhaps this is why bkt is often preferred as breakfast when it isn’t sweaty hot out.

The bak kut teh here comes in either soup or dry versions with a variety of different cuts to choose from. For those who loves pork fat, “pua pui chiak” (half fat, half lean), “tua kut” (big pone), and “seh kut” (small bones) are some of the cuts you should go for.

Additionally, you can also order innards such as stomach and intestine here. You can have these on a separate bowl in case some may not want them next to their meat, which is a bit of a shame, really!

dry bkt, soup bkt, and innards
dry bkt, soup bkt, and innards

The dry bkt here is certainly competent, rich in flavor and as usual, comes with a bit of dry chili and some okra slices to gives it a bit of character. Soup version is pretty decent here as well, while it isn’t the thickest, there’s still good herbal note, and they are happy to refill the clay pot as much and as often as you like.

As for the meat, I thought they are just slightly firmer than some of the best ones in Klang, though by no means anywhere close to “tough” territory. Overall this is a pretty decent bkt outlet that’s made better by having air conditioned dining area and unlimited soup. Not a bad choice really.

KY eats – Yi Pin Seafood Bak Kut Teh, Klang

I’m always in the look out for new bak kut teh places to try out, so when I saw this new stall opening up near Peng Heong Paikut at Klang, I thought I should check it out, hence, Yi Pin Seafood Bak Kut Teh.

Yi Pin took over the space that was previously occupied by another bkt place by the name of 石头肉骨茶 (rock bkt?). A corner shop a stone’s throw away from Masjid Bandar Diraja Klang.

I ordered a single portion of bkt with seafood, prawns in this case. I’d have liked to have it with lala, but was unavailable when I was there.

That order didn’t turn out bad at all. The prawns were top notch, fresh, flavorful, and together with the spicy herbal soup, makes for a good, sumptuous meal. The fatty 3-layer pork held their own too. I thought it was perhaps a little better than the version at Hon Kee I had prior, but my favorite is the lala bak kut the at Yun Heng.

At 28 ringgit for enough pork, 5 pieces of decent size prawns, I thought it was of good value as well.

They are open for lunch as well as dinner, and offer other dishes ala “tai chao” style in addition to bak kut teh.

This is the 63rd bak kut teh review that I’ve done, so I guess it’s safe to say that bak kut teh was and still is one of my all time favorite dish. This time, let’s look at one of Klang’s more famous outfit – Batu Belah Boon Hua bak kut teh.

Batu Belah Boon Hua bak kut teh
Batu Belah Boon Hua bak kut teh

Batu Belah Boon Hua is located off Jalan Meru, just 3-4 minutes away from the NKVE or Federal Highway exit respectively. Like many bak kut teh restaurants in Klang, this place is fitted with zinc roof and does not have 4 walls. The fans generally does an okay job in providing comfort to diners, but expect a bit of sweat when the weather is hot, place is packed, and soup is steaming.

You get to have your bak kut teh in either individual bowls with your favorite cut of meat, or in claypot with a bit of a mix plus tofu skin (fu chuk) and raw cabbage. Purists will go with bowls, but to be honest, do what you like as there’s no wrong way of serving bak kut teh (except if you make it pepper soup instead, looking at you, Singapore & Johor!).

We had kahwan (fatty leg joints), and pua pui chiak (pork belly) in clay pot for two. The meat were tender, flavorful, and fatty bits could be cut just by using your spoon. The soup too had a strong hint of herbal taste to it, well balanced. I do also like the fact that you can request for fried shallots as a side to add to the steamed rice, elevating the experience just a bit.

Get here earlier especially if it’s on a weekend, you don’t want to be sweating from standing in queue even before you eat.

KY eats – 158 Hong Ba (breakfast), Pandamaran, Klang

Klang is forever associated with bak kut teh, but if you dig a little deeper, this district at the West of KL also offers some pretty unique dishes you may not find anywhere else – such is today’s topic – Hong Ba (封肉)

158 Hong Ba, Pandamaran, Klang
158 Hong Ba, Pandamaran, Klang

While the main ingredient in Hong Ba is similar to bak kut teh, hong ba usually consists of the fatty leg part, and is stewed instead of cooked in herbal soup, resulting in a broth that’s thick and sticky, but without the strong herbal note.

According to my friend Jodie, the best Hong Ba places in all of Klang is the Restoran 158 Hong Ba at Pandamaran near Port Klang. It is located at Jalan Chan Ah Choo, the main road in which you can find over half a dozen bak kut teh restaurants, you know you’re at the ground zero of porky goodness when you’re there, there’s no mistaking it.

Hong Ba is best consumed by 3-4 pax so you can share the entire leg portion that comes with ample amount of fatty & skin bits that are so tender and smooth. At 158, they also serve it with some “alkaline kuih” that goes well with those thick broth.

Like most hong ba places, they also serve stewed chicken feet and hard boiled eggs. However, I think the best thing about Hong Ba is the availability of those pork tendon, those texture are superb and with those broth, a match made in heaven.

158 Hong Ba also serves at night, but it’s run by a different person and I believe the morning version is superior. Alternatively, Klang Utama also has a pretty good Hong Ba place by the name of Swee Xiang.

KY eats – WK Bak Kut Teh (偉强肉骨茶), Pandamaran Klang

This is the 65th bak kut teh entry in this blog, which probably say something about my affinity to this Malaysian-invented dish, and that wouldn’t be wrong. This is certainly the best thing coming out of Klang bar none.

偉强肉骨茶, WK Bak Kut Teh
偉强肉骨茶, WK Bak Kut Teh

Anyway, one of the most recent bak kut teh I’ve tried was WK at Pandamaran, just a stone’s throw away from the famed Ah Her bak kut teh, which is perhaps the biggest operation for night time bak kut teh in all of Klang.

As I was told by the server, WK (偉强) is a student of Rock bak kut teh (石头) down the same street, and in fact, WK used to operate on the same premise at night while Rock BKT does it in the morning before shifting to this new location at Lorong Jering in Pandamaran.

Our first visit to WK was indeed at the previous Rock BKT’s premise, and we’ve since revisited twice at their new location. Like many Klang’s bak kut teh outlets, WK’s set up is a fairly simple “side of the house” type, with plastic tables and chairs under a zinc roof with side walls, providing great ventilation especially in this pandemic era we live in.

WK offers a choice of traditional bowl type bak kut teh, or you can have them in the more “modern” claypot type instead, there’s also a choice of dry bak kut teh as well, if that is what you prefer.

intestine, kah wan (leg joint), pua pui chaik (3 layer pork)
intestine, kah wan (leg joint), pua pui chaik (3 layer pork)

Texture wise, WK hits the spot just right. They’re what you’d expect from top notch Klang style bak kut teh, with the meat being very soft yet without breaking apart, and fat layers in a state you can cut through by using just the spoon. While the soup doesn’t carry a very heavy herbal note, it does so with good balance and does not overpower the natural taste of the meat, a dish that is easy to eat, and brings comfort to any bak kut teh fan.

For those who like dry bak kut teh (like my mom), the version here is pretty competent as well. The cooked meat is lightly fried with sweet soy sauce and enhanced with dried red chili, dried cuttlefish, garlic, and some fresh lady’s fingers, mom approved.

If you’re a fan of bak kut teh, this is one that should satisfy.
